The Michael Vick Roundtable

Andre: Well worth the attention and media that will surround the Eagles in my opinion.  There are killers playing in the NFL, ie. Leonard Little, so why not Vick?  He’s very likely to play another 6 or 7 years in the NFL as a passing QB alone, so someone was going to take the gamble and the Eagles are a strongest franchise to take this on.  Their own coach has had two wayward sons arrested and he seems to have dealt with that drama just fine.  Anyone who argues the two year layoff was too long, it’s as if he was injured for those two years really, he won’t be too far behind by week 6.  It’s also been talked about that Goodell could shorten the suspension if there are no hiccups along the way, so it will be interesting to see how that pans out.

Chappy: I like the deal. It gives them a lot of leeway since Westbrook and Mcnabb usually get hurt for a couple of games during the season. Plus, Westbrook just hit the normal declining age of 30 for running backs, and if anyone can be as illusive for the Eagles as Westbrook is, then Vick has to be that guy. Now they have four playmakers on offense with Mcnabb, Vick, Westbrook, and Jackson! This addition might help soften the blow they suffered on defense losing Dawkins. It seems like a win win situation for the Eagles!

MCeezy: I’m probably the least excited about this move.  It’s not because I think it’ll hurt the Eagles, they have virtually nothing to lose here.  In fact, I think a lot of the guys will be happy to welcome Vick, since he was sort of a martyr in the whole dog fighting scandal, but that’s another story for another time.  However, on the field, I just don’t see him having much impact.  I think the rust will show and I’d be surprised to see him ever regain his previous form.  Nonetheless, he’s yet another weapon for a team that already has McNabb, Westbrook, Desean Jackson, Lesean McCoy, and Kendra Wilkinson.

Tony: So what’s the downside here for the Eagles? They are always in need of moving the needle both on the road and in Philly, and on the larger NFL stage as well.  This move accomplishes that in a big way! On the field itself, the Eagles have added one of the most dynamic athletes we’ve ever seen, and have the luxury of 6 weeks to break him in on the practice field with no pressure, because of his suspension. With the Wildcat offense and its offshoots the hot new scheme in the NFL, adding Vick makes the Eagles lethal. The NFL is a crazy game, so the true impact can’t be told just yet, but on the face of things the Eagles made a bold move…let’s watch and see how it plays out.

Some Contracts Really Are Killers

Homer Simpson Doh

There are a lot of bad contracts for baseball players every year, but there are a few of them that must have had Ray Charles reading them over before they were inked in. In making this list, I decided to make a couple of parameters. The contract has to go through at least next season. The entire body of the contract has to be bad. For example, you really can’t argue against the $18 million Derek Jeter is due to make next year as being overpriced.Derek Jeter If you look at how great the first seven years of his contract were for the Yankees, I’m sure there would be no hesitation in a do-over situation. You could say that someone like Eric Chavez would qualify as he’s due to make $11 million next season, and he has only played 418 games over the last 5 years of his 6 year contract. But on the flip side I can understand why they picked him to build a team around him at the time. He was never on the DL and won six straight gold gloves averaging nearly 25 HR’s and 100 RBI per season. So really when they signed him, it wasn’t quite as ridiculous as it looks. Here are a few of the ugliest contract situations in the MLB right now.

It’s hard not to ignore the third Blue Jays since they have been under the Riccardi regime, they seem to like to cut contracts short. BJ Ryan, who is now out of baseball is owed $10 million next year. I guess they shouldn’t sign pitchers at the ripe age of 30 to five year deals coming off their first and really only good season of their career. They also dumped Frank Thomas last year and nobody wanted to pick up the tab on him either. They were scared of Alex Rios and his outrageous contract, but were lucky enough to get bailed out by the White Sox earlier this week. Come to think of it, just based on these three horrific contracts, how is JP still running things across the border!?! Must be some kind of Canadian loyalty or a forgive and forget kind of thing.Vernon Wells Vernon Wells is about as ridiculous as it gets! He’s owed $23 million in 2011 and $21 million in 2012. He isn’t a good defender, and isn’t exactly tearing the cover off the ball. He has a no trade clause as if anyone would want to take on that money. Wait, maybe the White Sox will!?!

Sorry Tony, but your Cubbies have a few monster contracts on the list. Soriano is tough to top as he’s due to turn 34 this off-season, and the Cubs owe him $18 million annually through 2014. He was a 40-40 guy when they signed him, but he was turning 31! It’s tough to justify giving him 8 years, and he may prove me wrong but since they signed him he’s been more of a 20-20 guy, and you can definately get that for cheaper. Milton Bradley is owed $9 million in 2010 and $12 million in 2011, for having half a good season in Texas before they signed him. Zambrano and Ramierez could be killers at the end of theirs, but we’ll see since they’re still doing well.

It’s impossible to avoid Barry Zito’s contract in San Francisco. He’s going to get about $19 million for the next four years, and it’s the most widely criticized contract among the baseball world.Barry Zito If anything, you just hope the Giants learned their lesson after this one. They really didn’t though as they overpaid for Renteria this offseason, but not to the extent of Aaron Rowand’s deal that is in place. Rowand is going to make $12 million annually for the next three years. He did come off a great season, but since going to SF he hasn’t really showed that he was worth the money. I think he was on the over-rated side defensively to begin with. Yeah, he made some amazing catches, but overall he isn’t anything that special to warrant that much money.

My favorite team to hate, the Angels, and Gary Matthews ugly contract will always makes me smile as long as it exists. He’s got two years left for nearly $12 million a year. He hitting a solid .250 in his Angels career and is holding down the fourth outfielder spot.Gary Matthews Jr. Fuentes contract isn’t ridiculous, but personally I would have gone for something cheaper as he’s owed $10 million next year. At least his contract is a short one. Carlos Lee gets an honorable mention. He’s still a solid hitter, but how long can it last? He’s going to make $18.5 million annually for the next three years. He can’t run the bases or play in the outfield, so once he stops hitting it will look ridiculous. He looks to be on the road to being the next Travis Hafner, but at least the Indians only owe him $13 million annually over the next three years. As we wave goodbye to the steroid era (At least, I think) and the gross over spending on contracts for players on PED’s, I think lists like mine will shrink. If it doesn’t, we can blame it on GM’s like JP Riccardi!

Irate Best Buy “Customers” Are Stupid

Customers who jumped on the $9.99 52″ Samsung television deal recently are going nuts because they won’t be getting their $10 TV.  Many are citing the old principal that it’s false advertising and Best Buy should therefore honor the deal.  I even heard one “customer” who works in the legal field explaining that she had an agreement as a buyer between herself and the seller and therefore by not honoring the agreement, Best Buy is guilty of breach of contract.  Sounds fine in theory, but there’s one problem.  It was a mistake.  Yes, it’s unfortunate that the deal was “too good to be true,” but if you didn’t see that coming, it’s your own fault.  Even the Better Business Bureau issued a statement basically saying they won’t be pursuing any action against the retailer due to what was “obviously human error.”  Get over it, folks.  I’ve come up with countless examples where if things were switched around, these same people would be happy to have a deal taken off the table.  What if your real estate agent made a mistake and left off a couple zeros on the listing for your house? If someone jumped on it and paid $2,500 for your house, are you really going to say “damn…” and start packing your things?  Didn’t think so.

Lescott on the Move? We’ve got the Fee!

$15 Million? $18 Million? Neither was enough to make Everton blink. So what figure DOES makes Moyes and company cave in and sell Joleon Lescott to Manchester City in the coming week? Honestly I think the amount is pretty simple, $25 Million pounds. Throw that hugo mass of money at Everton and be done with the entire saga in a matter of hours. Think about it, at this point money isn’t an issue of any kind for City, Lescott himself has been totally unsettled with the thought of his wages being doubled over night, and David Moyes would have enormous freedom for future transfers for several years. At $25 Million both sides get what they want, Joleon becomes more like “Jorich” and we can all move on, and ready ourselves for the kick off to the new season Saturday. Anybody taking bets on what the transfer fee ends up being?

Victorino Might Not Be As Cool As I Thought

This past weekend, Phillies OF Shane Victorino was ejected – from center field – for whining about calls.  Today, he’s whining about something else.  Someone threw a beer on him.  So, naturally, Victorino filed a police report. Really, man?!  I root for the guy, if nothing else, because he’s from Hawaii, but this is getting pretty ridiculous.  Getting hit with a beer is part of the game, not assault.  What ever happened to charging up into the stands and fighting everyone in sight when you get hit with a beer?!  While Ron Artest and Stephen Jackson are taking on the entire city of Detroit, Shane Victorino is down at the 19th District police station crying about a beer.  This is exactly why baseball players get the reputation for being soft.  What’s next, suing for defamation of character after when a fan calls you a “bum”?

You guys.... YOU GUYS! Watch out for Shane! Hell get PISSED if you get champagne on him!!

You guys.... YOU GUYS! Watch out for Shane! He'll get PISSED if you get champagne on him!!"

Is the Hibachi Baaacck!?!

Gilbert Arenas

I’ve always been a big Gilbert Arenas fan. It’s mostly due to the fact that he came up through the Warriors system, and was one of the many bright young stars that we let go. Warriors fans have always had to live through the many star players that have moved on, because we love our team, but we rarely win so you have to root for something. We rarely blame the players that left, as most our frustration is focused on the front office’s meager attempts to keep them.Gilbert Arenas Warriors That’s a completely different topic though. Reading today about him has me eerily excited to see him on the court again, well hopefully he can stay out there. Although his $100 million contract seems pretty ridiculous at the moment, if he comes back to his former All-Star form the Wizards could actually be a contender.

New Wizards coach, Flip Saunders, went to check him out in Chicago last week and stated “He gets wherever he wants to on the court. His quickness is back.” Coming off three knee surgeries in 1 ½ years he has a lot to prove, and probably not a patient fan base after putting a big chunk of their apples in his basket (bank account). I just hope when this year is over he won’t be battling Elton Brand for the biggest waste of cap space for a second straight season. It also has been reported that Agent 0 is getting his shooting touch back. With Flip Saunders bringing tempo better than Timberlake can bring sexy back, the return of the hibachi will make the Wizards a fun team to watch whoever they play!

I’m not saying this team is going to win it all, but with Arenas, Butler, and Jamison leading the way they should be tough every night. It’s the same situation with Minnesota deciding on Rambis as their new coach, they will be fun to watch except the Wizards actually have some solid players. They also made some moves that have drastically improved their depth by adding Mike Miller, Randy Foye, and Fabricio Oberto. Deshawn Stevenson was injured most of last year he also gives them a little extra depth. I’m not saying they are going to knock Boston, Orlando, or Cleveland off, but they will definitely be a force if Agent 0 is like his old self. In case you forgot just how good he was, here is NBATV’s top ten Arenas plays from the 2006-07 season.

Rios Gets A Bailout

Alex Rios

Alex Rios probably has made enough over his career to feel comfortable financially, but he received a bailout from the Chicago White Sox today. In one of the unprecedented moves I’ve ever seen, the Toronto Blue Jays put Alex Rios on waivers, just after he had signed a seven year $69.8 million dollar deal in April of 2008. Although JP Ricciardi said this was not a “salary dump”, there are only two explanations, they either knew more about his decline over the last two years or they really did need the money. It also may show that JP isn’t really a good GM as he failed to make a deal for Halladay when there were plenty of options out there for him, and now he’s dumping one of his biggest signings he’s made since being Toronto’s GM. Who knows whats going on north of the border! Maybe Rios couldn’t cut it when they started testing for certain PEDs that he was taking, which forced Toronto’s hand to cut ties before the monster portion of his contract kicked in. I’ve never heard a name as big as his just released for nothing. I saw it flash on television while I was at a Sacramento Rivercats game (Oakland A’s AAA team), and went back to my friends to tell them that Rios was on waivers and nobody believed me! That’s how weird this move was!

The Chicago White Sox claimed him today, which has added to this perplexing situation. They picked up a fourth outfielder when they already have three good options in Dye, Podsednik, and Quentin. Just earlier this month they picked up Peavy via trade, and his ginormous contract of $45 million over the next three years, and now take on Alex’s ridiculous contract too! Why did they even want to pick up a fourth outfielder, especially one that is struggling?Gary Matthews Jr. Maybe they saw how well it worked out for the Angels by overpaying on Gary Matthews Jr. to be their fourth or fifth outfielder. One thing I still can’t figure out is, why wouldn’t the White Sox just let him not get claimed? If they let him fall through waivers, which he probably would have with his terrible numbers this season (.264 BA, 14 HR, 62 RBI over 108 games). This is also his second straight declining season, which makes this even more baffling. If and when he cleared waivers, they could have signed him to a different contract over the off-season and easily could have paid him less than $10 million a year. They are three games out of the division race at the moment, and I don’t see how this will help them other than having a “good player” to fill in when other players have their rest days. If they made the move because they had Thome, Dye and Contreras coming off the books in 2010, then why not wait until the off-season to make this move to try not to upset the clubhouse hierarchy? If anything, this move will hurt them financially and chemistry wise, unless he has a Matt Holliday-like turnaround in his new surroundings. There’s one big difference, Rios doesn’t have Pujols or have the excuse of going back to a familiar league! Good luck with that one Chicity.

Five Burning English Premier League Questions:

With less then a week remaining before the start of the new English Premier League season, I figured there is no better time to throw some questions out on the table to discuss. It’s been some time since the EPL has had so many different story lines taking place all at one time, and mainly concerning transfer activity. And for once teams seemingly are downgrading  (maybe staying stagnate at best) instead of upgrading with new talent (minus Manchester City of course).

Question # 1: Who is the front runner to win the Premier League this season?

Currently I don’t see a change to the top three clubs of Manchester United, Chelsea, and Liverpool. All three teams have either stood pat, or have had to accept unreal transfer bids for a few of there star players (Ronaldo, Alonso, and Tevez being the most prominent names). One thing we are not accustomed to seeing are these three giants of the Premier League not being active buyers on the transfer market. Manchester United has made some small purchases but nothing you would consider extremely note worthy, and Chelsea’s lone purchase of Yuri Zhirkov only figures to be a squad player at this point. None the less, the essence of each squad is still fully in tact and a United, Chelsea, Pool finish in that order seems to be in the cards yet again this season.

Question # 2: What will Manchester City accomplish this year?

Win the FA Cup? Win the League Cup? Something tells me those two competitions aren’t on the radar….Having spent well over 100 million pounds in the transfer market and scooping up such well know players such as Gareth Barry, Kolo Toure, Roque Santa Cruz, Carlos Tevez, and Adebayor, Manchester City’s single and massively important target this season is to displace one of the big four, and qualify for the Champions League. Anything less will certainly been seen as a total failure, and cost manger Mark Hughes his job in the process. Now the real question, can they do it? Initially, my impression is no. Aston Villa, Everton, and Tottenham all seem to be improving clubs that should provide ample road blocks to City’s quest. Arsenal, although not active in the transfer market still holds the majority of its young squad in tact, and maybe most importantly still has Arsene Wenger at the helm. Manchester City’s transfer activity can’t be underestimated however,if that squad gels early in the season, and Hughes keeps his players happy with playing time, Arsenal could be the odd team out heading into next seasons Champions League draw…….Only time will tell.

Question #3: Can Chelsea win the Premier League this season?

(First off, a small confession here before I go on any further. I’m a life long Chelsea fan, and must disclose my bias to anybody reading this before hand!)

Of course they can, why not? United hasn’t gotten any better, and Liverpool seems to be unloading more of their stars with each passing day (and getting richer in the process). Meanwhile Chelsea by and large has stood pat, content to roll into next season with the same squad, a fact that I believe to be very understated heading into the season.  A healthy Ricardo Carvalho will also feel like a new transfer after his injury plagued campaign last season (and stop you’re bitching were not selling you to Inter this season).  Additionally, judging by the early preseason tour in the United States, Carlos Ancelotti has made a seamless transition at the club. Ancelotti is a master tactician, which will be essential in the battle to over haul a confident United squad. In the end however, I believe Chelsea will most likely come up short. It’s been well documented that Roman Abramovich’s single most important goal for Chelsea is too finally (and Chelsea fans understand the word FINALLY) win the Champions League. I have a sneaking suspicion that ultimately, this quest for European glory will cost Chelsea something domestically in the process.

Question # 4: Who makes the relegation radar to start the EPL season?

Early season favorites for relegation in the Premier League are always the three teams coming up from the Championship. I don’t think many people could make a convincing case for Wolves, Burnley, or Birmingham to stay up before a ball has even been kicked this season. Stoke City and Hull have also done little this summer to convince me that the cross hairs of the drop aren’t centered squarely on them. A few other surprise contenders make my list for relegation watch: Portsmouth and Bolton. With Portsmouth in “sell for survival” mode with their entire squad, they seem to be an ideal candidate heading into the new season. I don’t know what to say about Bolton, every year I feel like the talent they run out on the pitch should get them relegated. But some how they find ways to grind out results, get their 40 plus golden pts, and escape.

Question #5: Who will be the biggest surprise in the EPL this season?

I know Tottenham is considered one of the bigger clubs in England; however recent results in the league have been anything but impressive. Last year’s flirtation with relegation in the beginning of the season being perhaps the most illustrative. With Harry Rednapp in firm control at White Hart Lane, and several miscast characters exiting late last yearand during the summer I have a feeling this might be a good year for the Spurs. So, what would qualify as a major surprise for this club? I’ll go on record and predict a 6th place finish, and a return to Europe.

Sorry For the Graphic Nature

However, I didn’t write this, so I feel it’s okay.  I was doing a little “gold mining” on craigslist this morning, but unfortunately, Sacramento doesn’t appear to be that creative.  Even though I don’t live there anymore, I’m probably better off sticking to San Francisco CL.  However, I came across this in the rants and raves, and I’m really not sure what to make of it.  Judge for yourself…

I passed out at a pals and awoke to (his ass bouncing on my)

Date: 2009-08-08, 3:48AM PDT

dick!! I didnt want to cause a confrontation or hurt his feelings, but he kept on for half the night ! Reluctantly I’d spooge into his butt and try to turn over , But He just rolled Me over and sucked it hard and lowered his ass onto it!! probably 5 times!! Finally He quit and I left about an hour later before He awoke and really never went back and have been distant since. Several years have passed and yesterday I see Him driving a Sheriffs car!!! OMG!!!! I wonder if the statue of limitations has expired? Its been 5-6 years now!

Umm, what??  I have so many questions.  Most are simply, “what??”  But I’m also curious as to whether this is real or fake, whether it’s actually a rant or a rave, why it sounds like a female (perhaps just the OMG) when that is biologically impossible, or what the perpetrator being a sheriff has to do with anything.  And yes, poster, I believe the statute of limitations has run up.  If it hasn’t, this post might diminish your argument here.  I mean, I don’t think “spooging into his butt and trying to turn over” is what rape victims do in self-defense.  I don’t know, I’m probably thinking about it too hard, but I must admit, this was quite the thought-provoking anecdote.

A Picture Says a Thousand Words

A Picture Says a Thousand Words

Crabtreetment

The San Francisco 49ers were blessed with one of the easiest, no-brainer draft decisions when Wide Receiver Michael Crabtree fell in their laps at the 10th slot.  Problem is, in Crabtree’s mind, it didn’t happen that way.  He was the highest rated WR in the draft, so he should be paid like one.  If you haven’t heard the story, here’s Niners Nation’s in-depth account.

Michael Crabtree is continuing the much-maligned tradition of rookies holding out in training camp in attempt to earn more money despite the fact that they have never taken an NFL snap.  I often wonder how fans ever forgive these players after pulling such shenanigans.  The Oakland Raiders had to deal with this recently with Jamarcus Russell, and now, the nightmare has shifted across the Bay to Santa Clara / San Francisco where what the Niners once thought was a gift, has now turned into a disaster.  While I’d like to root for the 49ers to hold a firm position, they don’t have much leverage here.  Gaining much publicity this year in Niners camp is Alex Smith’s attempt to reclaim the starting spot that he should’ve been holding down for the last two full seasons.  The concequence is a constant reminder of the franchise’s shortcomings in the draft which they held the #1 overall pick.  It wasn’t considered by anyone to be a deep draft, but with #24 pick Aaron Rodgers succeeding Brett Favre in Green Bay, the scarlet and gold are publicly relegated to the short end of the stick.  So, with the Alex Smith debacle playing in the background, the Michael Crabtree situation makes things that much more urgent.  No one expects him to be a superstar, but at the same time, he’s as close to a sure-fire WR prospect as we’ve seen in the last few years.  Adding to the burden is the lack of the depth at the wideout spot.  Sure, there are a handful of capable receivers on the roster, but Brandon Jones, Isaac Bruce, and Josh Morgan doesn’t exactly have playoff receiving corps written on it.  Crabtree, unfortunately, is needed.

Douchebag

Douchebag

I will give that the 49ers fan base is a faithful one.  The franchise has been driven into the ground over the course of the last decade by the York family, but the fan support has been unwavering.  SF fans are dying to clutch on to a franchise player and cheer on his every move.  The problem is, they can’t find anyone to fill that role.  Alex Smith has blown his chances, Vernon Davis was practically handed the badge of fan-favorite, but has failed repeatedly to win over the faithful.  Frank Gore and Patrick Willis have helped carry the torch, but for a fan base who has grown up with Jerry Rice and Terrell Owens, who didn’t start to wear on nerves until he had actually earned his stripes, Crabtree is in a unique position to be the man for years to come with one of the most storied NFL franchises.  However, because the franchise is what it is, I don’t believe they should bend for Crabtree.  Let him walk.  This move on his part only is a preview of what is to come throughout his career.  Though it may be a PR nightmare for the time being, time will ultimately prove it to be the right decision.  Let’s face it, Crabtree isn’t worthy of lining up on the same hash mark as the great Jerry Rice.  He belongs somewhere like Kansas City or Minnesota anyway.

Anybody know the logistics of whether SF could work out a Crabtree for Boldin swap with the Cardinals?

Rex, A Man With His Own Agenda

Rex Hudler

As birthdays come and go, they seem to get less and less exciting. Today is my birthday, and thankfully I’m a couple years removed from those drink till you blackout birthdays. The one good thing about birthdays is that you are always right, and nobody argues with the bday person. I thought this would be the best possible time to blast my favorite announcer Rex Hudler.

If you don’t know who Rex Hudler is, you should probably thank god that you haven’t! He was a utility player that played for six major league teams over 13 seasons including the Angels for 3 of those seasons. Anyways, he never was a star, and his stats and bio aren’t the point of this post. If you were looking for info on him you should look on Wiki. He is currently the Angels color man, and is the worst announcer I’ve had to listen to. He might even be worse than this guy.

I don’t think I have ever had as much pure hatred for any other announcer in any sport. Sure guys like Joe Buck and Bill Walton annoy the crap out of me, but Hudler takes the cake. I think he somehow found a way around saying anything positive about the opposing team. I don’t mind homers, and even Jim Barnett the Warriors announcer gets pretty ridiculous with his rants, but at least he gives the other team credit when credit’s due. If you could just listen to his half of a broadcast without the play by play guy you’d think the Angels were playing against themselves. He just gives no insight to anyone except his Angels, and unless you like them it’s pretty hard to listen to. When I first moved to SoCal, I didn’t like the Angels or the rally monkey, but I didn’t hate them the way I do now. Thanks Rex for making me realize how lame your team is, and killing any chance of me ever rooting for the Angels on any level!

Shaq-Fu

I don’t think I’ve seen this video or heard this song in at least 15 years.  I’m okay with that too.

I Accidentally Won $1.65 Mil On a Nickel Slot On the Way to Work

This is obviously a stock photo, for its doubtful the woman was young, hot, and Asian.

This is obviously a stock photo, for it's doubtful the woman was young, hot, and Asian.

Courtesy of the Sacramento Bee….

An Auburn woman’s favorite slots at Thunder Valley Casino in Lincoln are a set of Wizard of Oz nickel machines. So, Susan Nott, a federal employee, decided to stop by the casino 30 miles east of Sacramento on Tuesday morning to give them another try.

After playing a five-cent machine for about 30 minutes she hit it big — winning $1,648,076.81.

Nott said she would spend her winnings to buy a car, pay off her children’s student loans and invest.

Can you imagine that call in to work? “Hey boss, I’m, uh, not gonna make it in this morning.  Actually, I might not make it in for a couple weeks.  I just won $1.65 million this morning, so um, yeah.  Hope that’s not a problem.  I mean, if it is, then I quit, but you know, I’ll, uh, come back sooner or later otherwise.”

Sure is a lot better than the guy who racked up a $29,000 tab at a Las Vegas strip club while blacked out!

X-Games 15: Is There Any Growing Interest?

Danny Way X Games

With the conclusion of the X-Games 15 on Sunday, it feels like extreme sports have reached their peak as far as a national audience goes. The X-games are the most popular nationally recognized event for the action sports industry, but it doesn’t seem to be growing or competing with America’s sports (baseball, basketball or football). It’s fun to watch these individuals go all out throwing their bodies around to pull out some amazing tricks, but I always wonder why it never quite catches on the way our “national” sports have. There are a few factors keep these sports under the radar compared to the team sports that everybody watches. It’s tough for a sport that is ultimately about style and individuality to compete with the mainstream sports. Since it is so subjective in judging, there is a feeling after many contests that there could have been a different winner. When compared to the individual sports of the Olympics, tennis, and golf, it’s easy to see why they aren’t as popular on the national level, since it’s much harder to sustain an audience that cares about all the athletes involved. Most of these action sports are played on a fun/recreational level by just as many people as team sports, so why aren’t they as popular?

Is it individual sport versus a team sport? This has to be part of it. Just like golf has Tiger and the swimming has Michael Phelps the extreme sports world has their own mainstays in the upper echelon like skateboarders Danny Way and Tony Hawk, Dirt bike and Rally car driver Travis Pastrana and Rickey Carmichael, surfing’s Kelly Slater, and BMX riders Dave Mirra and Matt Hoffman.Kelly Slater Most casual fans that follow any of these sports can tell you how good those top three or four guys are or who the Michael Jordan of that sport is, but if probed further they probably couldn’t tell you much of anything about the rest of the field. For a team sport, you most likely know the key guys on your team, and follow them throughout a season learning more about the “new guys” as you go. It naturally makes you feel closer to a given player when you see them on a regular basis, and can get behind them on a (us vs. the league basis). There’s also the feeling of representing your city or nearby city. In the action sports industry, the only time you would hear about most of the participants in the X-Games is in videos sold at board shops, magazines, or on Fuel TV. There isn’t as much of a city affiliation except their favorite spots to rip, unless that athlete happens to come from your area. The accessibility to the action sports athletes is far less, which makes it harder for the general population to get behind these athletes since they don’t feel as connected to them.Nate Adams It’s just like golf, as you watch a tournament and don’t see Tiger or Phil at the top of the leader board, then you probably won’t be as interested in watching the rest of the event. Same thing goes for some of the X-Games events as the general public rarely knows any of the contestants are so why would they keep watching after they’ve seen a few of them do the most difficult new tricks already.

The clarity of an obvious winner and loser are easy in the timed events, but the scoring by judges it often turns into a popularity contest. In the X-Games new skateboarding contest this year, “The Rail Jam”, Danny Way did a switch 50-50 across the rail, and emerged as the champion. I’m not discounting anything he did, but I can’t help but think that the judges gave him that win because he had an injured knee and ankle that caused him to hobble through the contest. There were a couple of other tricks that I (a former skateboarder) personally deemed much more difficult than Way’s trick. It didn’t feel like there was a clear cut winner or loser in a bunch events, which made it hard for me to feel satisfied at the end of a contest. In the end, it truly feels like these guys aren’t really trying to win. They do want to land the tricks that they are trying, but they are doing it more just to progress the sport. This is the aspect I’m most confused on. The action sports industry is all about learing the moves, and creating your own style through those moves, so a lot of the events are more of a specticle than a contest. I’m definately not saying that they should be a show like Disney on Ice, but most of these sports are an art, and like most art forms we may never truly understand them! This is why it will never be as popular as our national team sports.
