If I Only Had A Tweet….

Clearly we’re all in full Summer swing each weekend as Doin Work seems to get laid off every Saturday and Sunday. But just because I spent my weekend bouncing between the pool, Hurricane Irene coverage, and beautiful Lake Clementine doesn’t mean I didn’t catch my share of sports this weekend. And what I didn’t catch over the weekend, I caught up on the radio during my morning and afternoon commute. Twice today, I started my thought with “If I had a Twitter, I’d tweet…..” Well I don’t have a twitter, but I do have a blog. So here are the tweets you would have seen if @The RealMCeezy existed…..

@Arian Foster: If it weren’t for Fantasy, no one would even KNOW you’re hurt. Be glad people know who you are!

@MichaelVick: Unless something CRAZY happened in the pen’, you just grabbed the biggest rebound in the history of human redemption.

@WilsonChandler: Bold move signing in China knowing you can’t come back if the lockout ends. But what does that say about the status of the lockout more importantly?

@JoshWillingham: Thank the baseball gods you hit a two-run double of Boston pitching outfielder Darnell McDonald on Friday night.

@SFGiantsFans: I hear you griping about the offense on KNBR 680 and KHTK 1140. You’re forgetting they overachieved last year. Vegas didn’t pick them to repeat, so you shouldn’t either.

@PepsiRoyaners: Congratulations to my fantasy baseball team for clinching a playoff spot. We survived serious injuries to Buster Posey, David Wright, and Jimmy Rollins, but we stuck with our guns, i.e. Matt Kemp. We pulled the league’s best ERA on the strength of Matt Cain, Ricky Romero, Ervin Santana, and Jeremy Hellickson (plus Price, Carpenter, Harrison, and Danks). But, just like real baseball, if we can JUST all get healthy and hot at the right time……

Dodgeball

Alright…. this has gone too far. It’s gone too far, and we’re not even to the NBC Sunday night game. But this Matt Dodge kid is getting thrown under the bus pretty hard today. At some point during both Jets-Steelers and Raiders-Broncos, the CBS coverage crews were dumping on him pretty hard. Now, ESPN Sportsnation is getting a few kicks in with their latest poll. Who do you blame more, the Giants defense or MATT DODGE? Do we really believe he was told deliberately not to punt to Desean Jackson, and he just munsoned it? I’ve got to give him more credit than that. This one’s on the coaches if you ask me. In every operation, you’ve got people in charge of making decisions, and it’s their job to put certain people in the right situations. If you’re getting paid to run the show, then you should probably make a point to make sure your punter knows to not punt to Jackson. It’s just a simple lack of preparation. We all do it, but damn, they’re really letting this kid take the fall for it this time. Just because he’s the league leader in blocked punts doesn’t mean he’s an idiot. Not sure why I’m defending this guy – I’d never even heard of him before today. The Legend of Michael Vick just grew a whole nother chapter though…..

Which makes me want to weigh in, for the first time really, on Michael Vick. Chris Berman said (overdramatically) that players didn’t want to let Vick down. This is true because a lot of players could have been dragged down with him, but he basically took the fall for the whole league. He didn’t run a dogfighting ring; he bred dogs. He bred them and sold them to his colleagues. Naturally they wanted badass dogs that could fight and his business evolved. He made some costly decisions, but in the end, he took the fall for a lot of other people’s actions – and never threw anyone under the bus in the process. As a result, the majority of the NFL is going out their way to have his back in return for him having theirs. If there is a way for the Eagles to play in Atlanta against the Falcons in the playoffs, sign me up. That’s looking like the likely NFC Championship game right now.

In West Coast news, Tim Tebow made his first NFL start – in Oakland. The most Christian player in the league has to make his debut in the Black Hole, with demons and skeletons everywhere. It brought a smile to my face last night when I heard the news he was getting the start. Much to my delight, the Raiders pulled away in the second half and came away with a 39-23 win. That’s a total of 98 points on the Broncos this year in two games. Shanahan would’ve never stood for this, but he’s got his own share of problems right now. As for the Raiders, they’ll host the Colts next week, in a game that’s unfortunately important for Indianapolis. Oakland is now 2 games back with two to play. The upside is that they’re really only one game back from a winner-take-all showdown in Kansas City. The possibility of the Chiefs losing to Tennessee just got a little more promising today with the Titans showing signs of life and beating Houston. The Colts game is one the Raiders really have no business winning, but it makes the game worth watching, and those are two words I haven’t used to describe a Week 16 Raiders game in a long time.

Doin Lists

Doin Lists QB Ranking Edition

10.  Joe Flacco/Eli Manning

I couldn’t choose between the two.  Eli Manning will finish with better numbers, but despite a Super Bowl victory on his resume in which he was named MVP, I still don’t trust him in crucial moments.  I think it’s his face.  Joe Flacco on the other hand, is pretty cool come crunch time.  In fact, had it not been for another guy on this list, the Ravens would sit on a 7-2 record atop the AFC North, on the strength of Flacco’s come back effort against Atlanta this past Thursday.

9.  Josh Freeman

Tampa Bay has no business in being a playoff contender, and yet here they are.  The development of LaGarrette Blount, the resurrection of Mike Williams, and a solid defensive unit have all contributed to their success.  But the main reason is because this kid Josh Freeman, only in his second year, knows how to win.  His numbers aren’t mind blowing, but he’s pretty clutch if you need a score late to win one.

8.  Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers isn’t quite having the season we expected after last year’s break out, but he’s still a top flight guy.  Several factors have contributed to Rodgers’ slow start, if you can call it that, but mainly injuries.  Losing Jermichael Finley was huge, as he had become Rodgers’ safety valve on the team.  Yet a 6-3 record, tied for first in the North, and a solid 2,300 yards passing with 15 touchdowns has him in the top ten.

7.  Kyle Orton

Kyle Orton, really?  If you’re not a Broncos fan, or a fantasy football stud, then you’d have reason to be shocked.  But Orton is second in the league in passing yards and is tied for fifth in touchdowns thrown.  Part of me has him ranked high on this list, simply because I’m happy for the guy.  He wasn’t wanted in Chicago and backed up Rex Grossman.  He was supposed to be keeping the seat warm for Tim Tebow.  Instead, he’s developed into a legitimate star in Denver.  In fantasy that is.  But still.

6.  Drew Brees

Drew Bees leads the league in completion percentage and is third in touchdowns thrown, and yet I have him sixth on my list?  I’m robbing Brees here, I know, but he’s not blowing me away this season.  Perhaps I’ve been spoiled by his past brilliance, and so now I’m being greedy.  Despite no running game, and a Super Bowl hangover, the Saints are 6-3 thanks to the arm of Brees.  I expect him to be higher up on my list come season’s end.

5.  Peyton Manning

Peyton Manning is still Peyton Manning.  He and the Colts have not had the most impressive season in recent history, but they’re still the team to beat in the AFC South.  Manning lost Dallas Clark, Anthony Gonzalez, Austin Collie and Pierre Garcon for all, or some part of the season, yet, he continues to put up Manning numbers.  To be honest, this is the most dangerous version of Manning, the one that’s doing enough to fly under the radar until the conference championship.  Watch out.

4.  Michael Vick

I might have Mike Vick one or two spots too high on my list according to some.  Make your own list then.  When Vick’s on the field and healthy, there’s absolutely no game plan that can stop this guy.  We’ve all known about his ability to run, but his arm has finally caught up to his legs, and the combination of the two makes him lethal.  New York sits atop the NFC East right now, but I don’t think that will last long.

3.  Philip Rivers

Philip Rivers acts like a dick.  But 90% of you would want that jerk on your team.  Keep it real.  He’s like Barry Bonds, minus the steroids controversy.  He’s putting up huge numbers for an injury plagued team and without VJ.  He currently leads the league in passing yards and is second in touchdowns thrown.  I’d have him ranked #1 on my list, if not for Diego’s record.  Still plenty of games to play though.

2.  Matt Ryan

Is that the Falcons with the NFC’s best record?  You best believe it.  Not only are they sitting pretty at 7-2, but they have quality wins against the Saints, Bucs and most recent, Baltimore Ravens.  Atlanta has talent across the board, but it starts with Ryan.  His masterful performance this past Thursday versus the Ravens, which included a game winning drive, is the reason why he’s ranked so high.  Hate on.

1.  Tom Brady

Tom Bieber.  Tom Terrific?  What ever the case, Brady has regained his MVP form, and despite the setback he and the Pats took in Cleveland, is there any other team you would least want to face in the playoffs than New England?  Who are the receivers on this team!?  Exactly.  Brady picked apart the best defense in the league with a kid named Gronkowski.  Gronkowski people.

The Best and Worst of the Double O Decade in Sports

It has been one wild decade full of fraud, juicers, womanizers, gamblers, cheaters, dopers, racists, and pretty much everything else in between. I’m not sure what to make of this decade, but the sports world has never been present more in our society. The economic hardships will undoubtedly change the landscape in the next decade as teams and leagues face bankruptcies and lockouts. Maybe we can blame the easy access of the internet/blogoshpere, and TMZ for coming along and showing us everything that is wrong with the athlete’s we adore making every one of their moves into a Michael Jackson type fiasco. It’s tough to see how diluted and foggy our perception of sports and athletes has become as the bad seemed to heavily outweigh the good. Many great things happened over the decade which kept us happy content after having to hear all the wild buzz on the athlete’s personal lives. Since nobody likes to listen or watch things about how the NBA Cares and United Way commercials for the NFL, we are stuck hearing the controversies that plague our sports including wild semi sports related stories like the Erin Andrews reverse peephole video. Doin Lines Week 13

Well, I took a week off, but I’m back! I’m actually pretty surprised that I have done my picks for all but one week. Anyways in week 11, I went 4-3 which brought me back to .500 (31-31-1) on the year. As I was scanning through the upcoming games I realized that I liked a lot of road teams to win, so this week is my road LOCKS of the week! The lovely lady pictured above is a former Redskins cheerleader turned wife to a Redskin named Chris Cooley. Yes, the guy who let his dong flop out for everyone to see on his blog (that’s his wife, Christy). As usual the home teams are in bold, or in this case listed 2nd…

Denver (-4.5) Over Kansas City

I actually think KC can hang in there with the Broncos, but that all depends on which Denver team shows up. Is it going to be the physical one that pushed teams around on the line of scrimmage for seven wins or will it be the team that got pushed around in four losses? I think having the extra few days off, and annihilating the Giants, should give them at least a little more confidence going into this showdown. If KC has any shot, it will be because of Jamaal Charles is running the ball effectively. The Broncos should win this game convincingly, if they truly are a contender.

Tennessee (+6.5) Over Indianapolis

This game features two teams that have lived to win in the 4th quarter. Vince and Peyton have been the definition of clutch these past six weeks. Only one team can win this week though, and you can bet it will be close. It’s ridiculous that the spread is this high even if the Colts are at home. The Colts haven’t beat the spread in three straight weeks, and this week doesn’t seem much different to me. The Titans are possibly the hottest team in the league, and the college option play with Vince and Johnson seems to have every analyst drooling worse than Peter Griffen’s co-worker at the toy factory. They have been playing some inspired and fun to watch football, so we’ll see how it plays out! I think this Titans squad has more talent to end the Colts winning streak than the Texans did.

Philadelphia (-5.5) Over Atlanta

I’m not sold on the Eagles, and usually don’t bet on them because they are so up and down. This week however, they are playing against a very banged up Atlanta team missing their glue on offense. Having Turner and Ryan sidelined makes this all that much easier to pick Philly. It will be interesting to see how the crowd reacts to Vick, but honestly, I don’t really care if they boo or cheer. If he was actually doing something in the offense, I could see a reason to make a big deal about it, but he’s not, so get over it MEDIA! It will just be a side note to the game. Desean Jackson will be out, but thankfully for the Eagles, they have plenty of other weapons to use in his absence.

New Orleans (-9.5) Over Washington

The Miller Lite Can’t Make This Line High Enough Award, goes to, every opponent that the Skins play from here on out. As we proclaimed yesterday on Doin Work, Drew Brees is the front runner for MVP this season. Hardly a shock to many, but we had to debate it anyways! I don’t really foresee any possible way for the Redskins to keep this one close. The Saints are looking to clinch the NFC South with this victory, so it should give them enough incentive to NOT overlook this game even on a short week! After making Brady look like an average QB, just think what they will do to Campbell and this ugly offense.

St. Louis (+9) Over Chicago

Yes, I finally found a game I can take the points for the lambs. Actually, I’m not overly confident on this one, but since I have to stick with the road team theme, it’s very possible for them to cover. The Rams are a terrible team that might not win again for the rest of the year, but the Bears aren’t much better lately as they’ve completely abandoned the run, and have a defense that is a former shell of the dominant unit that it used to be. The loss of Lance Briggs won’t be helping them much. They’ve been giving up tons of points. The Rams have one bright spot, and that is Steven Jackson. He’s currently ranked 2nd in the league in rushing yards, despite the team playing from behind in most cases. It’s going to be tough for Chicago to compete if they don’t start giving Forte the ball some more! I know he hasn’t done much this year, but giving him only eight carries last week is ridiculous!

San Diego (-11.5) Over Cleveland

Rivers was in our MVP talks, mainly because the Chargers could be the hottest team in the league, but alas, he was denied from the top 5. This San Diego team is one that nobody wants to face right now, especially a team as bad as the Browns! LT is finally playing well, maybe it’s because of his kid he just had. He didn’t want his newborn to think that he was the reason for his decline into running back irrelevance. He’s been scoring like he used to lately as opposing teams forget to protect against the run in this pass happy offense. Their D has been stepping it up too, causing turnovers, and getting pressure on QB’s. They look like their normal December selves. It’s only a question now of when will Norv mess this up!

The Michael Vick Roundtable

Andre: Well worth the attention and media that will surround the Eagles in my opinion.  There are killers playing in the NFL, ie. Leonard Little, so why not Vick?  He’s very likely to play another 6 or 7 years in the NFL as a passing QB alone, so someone was going to take the gamble and the Eagles are a strongest franchise to take this on.  Their own coach has had two wayward sons arrested and he seems to have dealt with that drama just fine.  Anyone who argues the two year layoff was too long, it’s as if he was injured for those two years really, he won’t be too far behind by week 6.  It’s also been talked about that Goodell could shorten the suspension if there are no hiccups along the way, so it will be interesting to see how that pans out.

Chappy: I like the deal. It gives them a lot of leeway since Westbrook and Mcnabb usually get hurt for a couple of games during the season. Plus, Westbrook just hit the normal declining age of 30 for running backs, and if anyone can be as illusive for the Eagles as Westbrook is, then Vick has to be that guy. Now they have four playmakers on offense with Mcnabb, Vick, Westbrook, and Jackson! This addition might help soften the blow they suffered on defense losing Dawkins. It seems like a win win situation for the Eagles!

MCeezy: I’m probably the least excited about this move.  It’s not because I think it’ll hurt the Eagles, they have virtually nothing to lose here.  In fact, I think a lot of the guys will be happy to welcome Vick, since he was sort of a martyr in the whole dog fighting scandal, but that’s another story for another time.  However, on the field, I just don’t see him having much impact.  I think the rust will show and I’d be surprised to see him ever regain his previous form.  Nonetheless, he’s yet another weapon for a team that already has McNabb, Westbrook, Desean Jackson, Lesean McCoy, and Kendra Wilkinson.

Tony: So what’s the downside here for the Eagles? They are always in need of moving the needle both on the road and in Philly, and on the larger NFL stage as well.  This move accomplishes that in a big way! On the field itself, the Eagles have added one of the most dynamic athletes we’ve ever seen, and have the luxury of 6 weeks to break him in on the practice field with no pressure, because of his suspension. With the Wildcat offense and its offshoots the hot new scheme in the NFL, adding Vick makes the Eagles lethal. The NFL is a crazy game, so the true impact can’t be told just yet, but on the face of things the Eagles made a bold move…let’s watch and see how it plays out.
