RFP of the Day: Eric “Butterbean” Esch

This week’s RFP isn’t technically a “player” of anything, but he’s still a notable sports figure of the 90s. Not quite cut out for boxing, the 5’11”, 415 pound Butterbean found his niche fighting in the Toughman circuit, where he compiled a 56-5 career record. He also dabbled in boxing a little bit, most notably when he fought, and lost to, Larry Holmes in 2002. Somehow he still managed to rack up 77 wins to go with 7 losses and 4 draws. He even had a son, Babybean, who became a boxer. Last October, he announced his retirement from boxing, but continues to fight in mixed martial arts circuits. These days, Butterbean is residing in Jasper, Alabama, where he owns his own restaurant, Mr. Bean BBQ.

Somehow this guy made the sport all the more demeaning. But little did I think that it could get as bad as it now is. What with the heavyweight scene and bitching and sniping between Pacquiao and Mayweather . The sport has become a real joke.

MMA and the UFC has made a convert out of me right now . Fu_k the sport and what’s happening within it as of now. Bob Arum and Don King have brought it to a level where even a sewer would come up smelling like a rose.

I wonder if that Simpsons episode back in the day of Homer letting guys tire themselves out by punching him was supposed to be a Butterbean reference!?!

Babybean is one of the best kids names I’ve heard in a long time!
